Her Story: An Alchemy of Cultural Re-Creation
The power of storytelling lies in its capacity to be a catalyst for transformation as much as in its ability to entertain. Through storytelling, one is given the potential to infect our society and the world with ideas that can inspire, connect and aid understanding while challenging problematic ideologies. The process of cultural re-creation as it relates to re-imagining gender and gender expression is gradually being undertaken by the rise of gender parity discourse. These initiatives are dedicated to addressing and resolving gender inequality in the film industry while re-defining depictions and stories of women in film.
In order to re-create and re-define gender and gender expression in our culture as it is reflected on screen, female and female-identified filmmakers are needed to tell stories that accurately represent diverse perspectives and voices in order to subvert the male gaze in visual storytelling and fill the void that currently exists in the male-dominated film industry worldwide. The importance of telling her story lies heavily on the concept and necessity of women’s agency and authorship in film and film production.
In our effort to champion stories from an alternative perspective, Femme Film is proud to present a film package written, directed and/or produced by local as well as national female talents armed with agency and the desire to carve a space in an industry that traditionally under- and misrepresents the bodies, identities, expressions and stories of women. These works use various methods and treatments illustrating how versatile and responsive the art of film can be in uplifting and empowering diverse perspectives. The filmmakers re-create and re-invent culture by producing films that imbed in our collective psyche an array of voices and representations of the intersectional life of women as it is experienced, filtered and expressed by each unique and individual lens.

Femme Wave and the Calgary Queer Arts Society are proud to screen shorts about growing into self and community by youth filmmakers. The Youth Queer Media Program (YQMP) is an exciting opportunity for youth who have an exceptional story to tell. Participants work alongside industry professionals to create a short film that represents their unique perspective on queer identity for youth today.
The program is open to any youth between 16-24 years of age, and no previous film experience is required. Short films can be of any genre or type and final films can be up to 15 minutes long.
The program runs each year from December – March and provides the time and tools to create a short film, including workshops with industry professionals in storyboarding, editing, filming, and production.
This is an encore presentation of these films, which initially premiered at Fairy Tales Calgary's Queer Film Festival in May.
Please note these films deal with complex issues, including intense emotional duress and trauma. This event is all ages, however the films deal with some mature themes. Please reach out to festival volunteers if you need help. We are a community and we exist to support each other.

À La Mode is a dreampop duo from Winnipeg. Dominique and Ava pass the whimsical and vulnerable nature of their songs through electronic beats, electric guitar, synth, and a bit of sardonic humour. They sound like the knick knack collection you inherited from Grand-maman; like the worn out summer dress you wear to sigh in on rainy days; like the ending of an episode of Twin Peaks season 3.

If ya don’t know, now ya know. Too Attached, the musical project of siblings Vivek Shraya and Shamik Bilgi, is blowing up. Since the release of their album Angry earlier this year, and Vivek’s triumphant return to Calgary as an assistant professor in the U of C’s English department, the duo is well and truly e-vry-where. And, we mean, duh. The album is a celebration of racialized anger that just happens to also be start to finish absolute bangers. Too Attached have landed on something that is timely yet long overdue, relatable and revolutionary, fun and frenzied. Above all else, Too Attached is entirely necessary. They’re taking artistic risks and making music so explicitly political and deeply passionate, it’s hard to think of another act doing the same, and going as far. It won’t be as hard a few years down the line, because Vivek and Shamik are paving a new path in our collective music history.

Madeleine Roger is a contemporary folksinger from Winnipeg, Canada. While accompanying herself on acoustic guitar in multiple tunings, it is her artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room, uniting her captivating voice with vivid lyricism and a maturity beyond her years. A former thespian and a lifelong traveler, she is prone to absorbing stories and questioning the way that things are, creating songs with imaginative melodies and honesty that bares truths about being alive.
Madeleine co-produced and co-engineered her debut album Cottonwood (out Oct. 26) with Lloyd Peterson (The Wailin’ Jenny’s, The Weakerthans) at Paintbox Recording in Winnipeg. The album was proudly made with gender parity – half of the producing, audio engineering, musicians, and other artists identify as female. Written from Madeleine’s home in Winnipeg MB, and in a woodstove-heated cabin that her great-grandparents built in the Manitoba backwoods, Cottonwood combines the elegant storytelling of folk traditions with the grounded vibe of roots music. The album portrays her intuitive creativity; reflections on femininity and equality, the majesty of the wilderness, and the beautiful awkwardness of trying to love another person.

Ah, yes. One of Calgary’s finest, loveliest, most trustworthy young musicians. Samantha Savage Smith has been working in the ‘biz, as they say, for a number of years, and after the 2011 release of ‘Tough Cookie,’ just keeps getting better and better. Her music is raw and relatable, soft and pointed, tender and tough. Hey, wonder if that’s where she got that album title?? Anyway, she’s set to release some new music real soon, and will be performing with a full band – rumour has it there may even be some bongos involved!

Hot Takes With Hot Dykes is a radio show, a podcast and and a performance duo about intersectionally reimagining the dyke diaspora left before us. Our mission statement with every episode is to hold space for art that is transparent, critical, and above all- really funny. Our diversity is in our unrelenting desire in being our whole-hearted queer selves. Our diversity is in speaking candidly about the trials that affect our kin, and not bending our morals to the brambles of the heteropatriarchy. Riel is an old soul at heart, a singer with a keen ear that translates to full-bodied melodies and thoughtful rhythms that aim to evoke emotion in its purest form. Being compared to a variety of incredible vocalists ranging from Adele to Tracy Chapman, this kid has a powerful voice in their music both lyrically, and literally. They’ve drawn inspiration from a wide range of unexpected places; medieval poetry, modern soul, and old jazz to name a few; but somehow, Riel manages cohesion in a chaos of influence, making them an artist in every sense of the word.

Formed during a moment of drunken clarity, Sweater Kittens started as an aesthetic that mirrored its birthplace: a New Year’s Eve house party, littered with empty whiskey bottles, glitter confetti, and bowls of half-eaten guacamole.
After a rousing group rendition of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” (yes, from Disney’s, The Lion King), Ashley (guitar) and Mallory (bass) dove deep into a conversation about starting a femme rock band. They left the party with a band name, a million-and-a-half merch ideas, and a commitment to starting on a musical journey together.
Today, Sweater Kittens is prolifically creating fuzzy, bass-laden, grunge rock, inspired by their riot grrrl predecessors and all the artists that helped them through their teenage years.

This YEG favourite has come a long way since getting their start at Not Enough Fest 3 years ago. Their anguish soaked brand of trashy, queer pop-punk continues to evolve, with their new release “bless this mess’ showcasing the heartbreaking range of the Burnett twins buried within catchy but complex melodies and intricate, keep ya guessing leads.
Dealing with themes of violence, trauma and power, this album is a rager that invites listeners to dance, cry, scream, and raucously move through the heartbreak of living in such a messed up world.

"Do you create things?! Do you care about justice?! We do!
Design justice asks that we interrogate our creative processes and center community, care, and accessibility in our work. As creators and collaborators, we are encouraged by the Design Justice Network and its design principles to disrupt narratives of power and privilege that determine who gets prioritized in design practices and who gets left behind.
Join us in imagining what a liberatory design justice practice might look like. We will ask questions such as: how can we dismantle systems of oppression through code? Or heal through woodwork? How can the designer become facilitator instead of expert?
Leila is a tenderhearted community handyboy. She is a woodworker and designs and builds electric guitars under the name TunaTone Instruments. She organized the Brown, Black & Fierce festival in Edmonton.

The lunar nodes are not planets but points in the heavens where the Sun, Moon and Earth’s orbit meet. The North Node symbolizes our karmic path forward, our growth edge for this lifetime. The South Node represents both the reservoir of gifts we have brought with us AND our unfinished business from previous lives (or previous 'this life'). Knowing the meaning behind their placement in our chart can give us insight into the place we stumble and struggle and help us to activate our innate gifts and greatest growth potential for our time on the planet.
