Call for Artists
Femme Wave is excited to announce the Community Transformation Workshop for Indigenous, Black and Racialized artists, with a focus on those that may identify with the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. This workshop is open to self-determined, early career artists based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary) on Treaty 7 territory. Institutional education or experience is not required to participate:
- 10 artists will be selected
- Each artist will receive a $100 honorarium as well as a lunch voucher for participation
- All artistic disciplines are welcome
Deadline to apply: Sept. 10, 2021 at 11:00pm
Workshop date: Sept. 18, 2021 11am-2:30pm (on Zoom)
The workshop is intended to create a caucused space to build authentic relationships with 2SLGBTQIA+ Indigenous, Black and racialized artists and center their perspectives, agency and self-determinacy within Femme Wave’s ongoing process of transformation. The structure and content of the workshop are based off of the results of our latest survey, and will be facilitated by Jordan Baylon, The Colour Factor and racialized members of the current Femme Wave Board of Directors. In reimagining the future Femme Wave and themselves within it, participating artists will:
- Explore what it looks like to create conditions for community care and a shared sense of belonging
- Reflect on the questions and priorities identified through the Femme Wave Transformation Survey
- Build relationships among the other artists in the cohort and the current Femme Wave Board of Directors, and brainstorm ways they might like to engage with Femme Wave moving forward (i.e. staffing/leadership, board governance, curation/programming, etc.)
After the workshop, all participating artists will have the option of receiving $550 that they can use at their own discretion:
- Artists will be asked to continue contemplating and exploring the ideas, questions and themes coming out of the workshop
- Artists will be encouraged to create work related to their reflections, but this is not an expectation
- Artists will be invited to share their reflections and any resulting work in a future community circle event in late 2021
- Work shared in the community circle event can be in process or incomplete
- Funds can be used to directly support artistic practice (materials, studio time, research) or to remove financial barriers to practicing their art
- Feedback from the artists will be used to develop and plan the structure of the community circle event
- Support will be offered to artists in the form of community care check ins, support with documentation, and other accommodations as needed
